About An Croenen

Originally from Flanders, An has studied singing at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent, Belgium and at the Théâtre du Lierre in Paris, France. She has sung in the Gents Madrigaal Koor in Belgium and the Lincoln Choir in Oxford. She has run courses in Singing and in Song Writing as Associated Lecturer at the Universities of Liverpool and of Chester. She has led community singing groups through West Cheshire College and has taught singing technique at the Hammond School in Chester. An is a qualified primary and secondary school teacher.

A firm believer in the therapeutic value of music making, she has enjoyed teaching children with special needs in Whitchurch, Shropshire and adults with mental health problems in Chester. In 2002 An secured a substantial grant from Youth Music, which allowed her to set up a consortium of schools and to provide free music making sessions ‘Around the World in Music’ on Saturdays for 100 children and young people of the area, culminating in the creation of a cd and a concert.  An organises themed singing workshops in schools as well as for adults; for more information please contact Active Learning Workshops on 01244 322 439.

An sings traditional English, Irish and Appalachian folk songs accompanied by a variety of instruments  (guitar, tenor guitar, portable harmonium, drums, and a srutibox). She loves playing with other local folk musicians and attends local folk clubs such as the Raven (Bear and Billet) and the Hungry Horse (Whitby).
